About the research

Have you ever tried to find out all the ingredients of a smoothie by just tasting it? Even with well-developed taste buds, it's an impossible task. But did you know that until recently scientists analyzed cancer tumors in a similar way? Luckily, there is now a new, more effective method of analysis. Sebastiaan Vanuytven (KU Leuven - FWO) explains it to you using a smoothie.

Intrigued by the fact that one faulty cell in a human body can cause one of the deadliest diseases, Sebastiaan started his education in biomedical sciences and bioinformatics. Sebastiaan is interested in understanding cancer at its most fundamental level, the individual cell, to deliver more effective detection methods and treatments with less side effects. His current PhD research focuses on figuring out how small differences between cells in a tumor affect therapy response and the ability to form metastasis
