About the research

After a stomach reduction and despite taking the pill suddenly become pregnant. It is not improbable -at least for women-, because a stomach reduction dramatically changes your digestive system. Such an operation causes you to take in less food and thus lose weight, but it can also have an effect on the digestion and thus intake of medication. Fortunately, Nele Steenackers studies the digestion of patients after such an operation in order to give them specific nutritional and medication advice.

Her love for food made her combine the best of both worlds with a master in Biomedical Sciences and a minor in Nutrition. Nele is now investigating how removing a part of your stomach and reconstructing the intestines for weight loss affects the abilities of the digestive system to take up nutrients and drugs.
