The design of safe, cheap and potent vaccines

About the research

Many vaccines need to be stored in refrigerators, which can be challenging in warmer and low income countries. This also makes vaccines quite expensive and thus unaffordable for the poor in these countries. That's why Dieudonné Buh Kum and his colleagues at KU Leuven are developing new, stable and affordable vaccines that will help save more lives.

Growing up in Africa with many challenges, Dieudonné Buh Kum felt compelled to contribute to the well-being of mankind which he holds at a very high esteem. His dream in life is to alleviate suffering by adding to the growing body of knowing to understand and eradicate diseases. His research is focused on designing novel approaches to understand how flaviviruses cause disease in humans and animals. He and his colleagues at the The Neyts-lab of Virology at the KU Leuven aim to use this knowledge to rationally design vaccines that are highly stable, affordable, safe and that can rapidly be produced during outbreaks.
