About the research

Katleen Wils (UGent - FWO) is a geologist researching earthquakes, yet you'll mostly see her bobbing in lakes on a boat. "What on earth do lakes have to do with earthquakes?", we hear you think. "Well, thanks to lakes we can look back in time, up to thousands of years ago," Katleen explains. This is how Katleen finds traces of ancient earthquakes at the bottom of lakes. What we can learn from this for the future, she tells you in this video.

From holidays in the mountains to computer games about volcanoes and eventually a Ph.D. on earthquakes, geology has always been an important part of Katleen Wils' life, just like her passion for research. Being able to turn this into a full-time job was a dream come true. With her enthusiasm, she hopes to convince both boys and girls to study geology, or at least consider a career in science.
