Enzybiotics in drops: a killer combination!

About the research

Almost 100 years ago Alexander Fleming discovered the first antibiotic: penicillin. Even then, he warned that there would come a day when bacteria would be resistant to all antibiotics. Unfortunately, that day is very near. Hans Gerstmans (UGent / KU Leuven) and his colleagues are working on a drug against resistant super-bacteria: a 'killer' combination of enzybiotics and water droplets ✂️💧

Hans Gerstmans’ admiration for nature’s ingenuity and his interest for technological breakthroughs inspired him to combine both fields in his research. During his master’s thesis he joined a research group focusing on the development of antibiotics based on antibacterial enzymes: enzybiotics. In his PhD, he investigates ways to accelerate the discovery and engineering of new enzybiotics using small water droplets. The goal is to develop a platform that produces a personalized enzybiotic for each bacterial infection.
