Exams and a smartphone: a toxic combo?

About the research

Heavy smartphone use results in poorer study performance, according to research by Simon Amez (Ghent University). To investigate this, Simon followed students for three years. He found out that students with above-average smartphone use score up to 1 point out of 20 less on their exams than their fellow students. 👨🏼‍🎓 📱

Understanding why some people succeed economically and others drove Simon Amez to study economics. When seeing how many students fail to perform academically he wondered why this is possible with so many technological help available. With his current PhD research at Ghent University he investigates whether these modern devices are actually productive resources.
