Wim Wouters' first job at the Museum of Natural Sciences  that of skeleton preparer for the modern reference collections. Later he moved on to study fish remains from excavations. He studies the influence of human activities such as pollution, water management and fishing on fish stocks over time. In this way a broader picture of the history of fishing over the last thousands of years can be reconstructed.
