About the research

Not all mothers can breastfeed, which is a pity, because breast milk contains important molecules for the baby. But what if we add these molecules to powdered milk? That is what Anke Goormans (Ghent University) is working on to help mothers and their babies.

Anke Goormans is a PhD student and teaching assistant at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at Ghent University. She is fascinated by microorganisms and their use in the development of more sustainable processes. Her PhD research focusses on making special sugar molecules, like human milk sugars, with microorganisms. Next to this, she also guides the practicals of Microbiology and the exercises of Industrial Biotechnology.
