About the research

The corona pandemic, the energy crisis, the new nitrogen policy, ... Our farmers are having a hard time lately. How do farmers best face such challenges so that they can continue to produce the food on our plates? As a farmer, is it best to opt for a robust strategy or to focus on adaptability? This is what Isabeau Coopmans (ILVO - KU Leuven) researched in her PhD via surveys and interviews with farmers.

Isabeau Coopmans is driven to contribute to the transition towards more sustainable food systems. In 2017, she started her PhD research on the resilience of farming systems. This was part of the Horizon 2020 project SURE-Farm, in which she was involved through ILVO (Flemish Institute for Agricultural, Fisheries, and Food Research) and supervised for her PhD by the Faculty of Bioengineering at KU Leuven, where she also graduated in 2017. The central question in this research project was how farmers and farming systems can better cope with a variety of challenges. As a researcher at ILVO, Isabeau is currently active in projects looking for solutions to food waste problems in the chain.
