Microbial protein as a sustainable meat substitute?

About the research

Meat is an important source of protein. But did you know that these proteins can also be obtained from microbes and bacteria? If you now take your nose up, we have to face the facts: you have undoubtedly already eaten the so-called microbial protein. A well-known example is the yeast found in stock cubes. Janne Spanooghe wants to introduce a new microbial protein source on your plate: purple bacteria.

Being unable to choose one specific scientific field was what drove Janne Spanoghe to start her studies in Bio-engineering. The multi-disciplinary character of this degree stimulates her to approach her PhD, but also day-to-day challenges from multiple angles. Her PhD focuses on the production of purple bacteria to use as a protein-rich feed or food in order to sustain the ever-growing world population. In the future, this will require behavioral changes in our diets and thus clear communication will be key to make this shift happen.
