About the research

Do you drink juice in the morning or enjoy a glass of wine to relax after a busy day? Did you know that in order to preserve its flavor and prevent bacterial growth, your favorite beverage has to go through several stages of processing? One is the filtration process, a very expensive production stage. To ensure you can enjoy your favorite drink at a low(er) price, Rishav Phukan (UGent - VITO - FWO) is developing next-generation membranes, which will help the industry cut costs and produce in a more eco-friendly way. Watch him explain how.

Hailing from India, a country that faces a water shortage crisis coupled with poor quality of water in many regions, Rishav was spurred to pursue a degree in Environmental Engineering with a focus on water treatment. During his formative years, he was introduced to the world of membranes which not only help in purifying dirty (waste) water, but also find applications in food (cheese) and beverage (wine, beer) production. Following his master's, he is now pursuing a Ph.D. degree at Ghent University and VITO, where his research focuses on developing a novel membrane to enhance process efficiencies in the industries that utilize them.
