Public transport tickets: to pay or not to pay?

About the research

Have you ever skipped paying for public transport? 🤫 If so, you're not alone. In Brussels, there’s a movement of commuters who believe public transport should be free for all. Carine Assaf (KU Leuven) investigates this growing debate. While users push for free access, transport companies are focused on fair pricing and tighter control. Her research explores how public transport policies can bridge the gap between users' desire for free transport and operators' strategies to prevent misuse.

After finishing her Master's in Urbanism and Strategic Planning, Carine Assaf obtained her PhD in engineering science, architecture at KU Leuven. Now, she is a postdoctoral researcher at KU Leuven, specializing in transport, with a focus on urban and rural public transport, informal transport, and illegal practices in public transport. Her work also addresses broader themes such as transport poverty, mobility injustices, mobility commons, sustainable transport, and social innovation.
