About the research

Climbing on the slide rather than sliding down? That should be possible at school, says Barbara Vandorpe (Arteveldehogeschool Ghent), as long as the children who want to slide down have priority. She advocates risky play at school. "Risky play allows children to push their boundaries and learn to deal with risks themselves." 👉 🎥

Young children, movement education and sports are what drives Barbara Vandorpe in and outside her career. She has a PhD in Movement and Sports Sciences and is currently a researcher and lecturer in preschool education at Artevelde University of Applied Sciences. Her topics of expertise are movement education, risky play and inquiry-based learning. Both her students as well as the toddlers she teaches gymnastics in her spare time learn the importance of learning by doing and getting back up when you fell down as life skills.
