About the research

Corrosion of metal structures can lead to disasters, such as the collapse of the Morandi bridge in Genua in 2018. In order to help prevent such tragedies engineer Negin Madelat (VUB) is working on a method for the early detection of corrosion underneath a thick layer of coating.

As a high school student, Negin Madelat was interested in chemistry, physics and mathematics. She believes studying science changes your view about the universe and natural phenomena. In her higher education career, she thoroughly learned how chemistry in small scales can affect people's lives. Meanwhile, the study of corrosion opened her eyes to its importance in the industry. Her current research focusses on improving the understanding of metal corrosion by applying protective coatings.
