About the research

Lots of people dislike these black sweets. But did you know that liquorice candy might well contain an ingredient to help cure wounds? Esther Hoste (Universiteit Gent - VIB) investigates whether an active compound found in the root of the liquorice plant can heal diabetic wounds.

Fascinated by the mechanisms that underlie diseases, Esther studied Biotechnology and later on started a PhD on the molecular events that shape the skin's barrier function. For her postdoctoral training, she moved to the UK and investigated how wound healing of the skin predisposes this tissue to tumour formation. After returning to Belgium, she continues her research on skin
cancer and develops new therapies to heal skin wounds in diabetic patients.
