About the research

Dutch is full of loan words, such as "last minute" or "lunch". It seems as if we can borrow from English without limit. But is that really the case? Linguist Marlieke Shaw (KU Leuven - FWO) looks into this by studying transcriptions of spoken texts. A real must-see for fans of the Dutch language.

Fascinated by the stories of Roald Dahl and J.K. Rowling, Marlieke Shaw spent her ideal day as a child reading and writing. Her passion for language was fuelled even further through text recital competitions and later when she started learning other languages. In her PhD project Marlieke investigates language contact between Dutch and English as well as between Medieval English and Old French.
