How do we win the battle against rare cancers such as sarcoma?

About the research

Everyone knows breast cancer and lung cancer, but have you ever heard of sarcoma? This rare cancer can occur throughout the body and affects 1% of cancer patients. Sarcoma is also very aggressive: even after intensive treatment, 4 out of 10 patients relapse within five years.

Because sarcoma is so rare, large studies with patients are difficult. That's why Stefanie Gijsels (UGent) is developing innovative models to mimic tumors in the lab and test new treatments - without patients serving as guinea pigs.

An interest in the workings of the human body and the motivation to help others drew Stefanie Gijsels to the University of Ghent to study medicine. She currently combines surgical training with a doctorate in cancer research, with sarcoma as her main focus.
