Protecting the brain: how to make safer bicycle helmets

Share:

About the research

In Belgium, 10,000 cyclists are injured in traffic accidents every year. While helmets help reduce skill fractures, they often don't protect cyclists from brain injuries. At the KU Leuven, Andrea Menichetti studies how much our brain can deform before getting injured in order to help manufacturers produce even safer helmets.

During his Mechanical Engineering studies, Andrea Menichetti became increasingly interested in protective devices for sports, reason why in 2017 he joined the IMPAct group at KU Leuven, where he is doing research on the biomechanics of traumatic brain injury. In his PhD project, he is studying how the brain behaves right after sustaining a head impact. The end goal is to improve the safety of bicycle helmets.
