About the research

About 1 billion people contract a fungal infection every year. Often it is only a superficial infection, but in some cases, it is worse and the fungus can get into the bloodstream. If that happens, you only have one chance in two of surviving. Jana Nysten (KU Leuven - FWO) wants to help increase that chance of survival by looking for a new medicine.

Jana Nysten is fascinated by the interaction between the human body and the countless microbes that live in and around us. After studying Biochemistry and Biotechnology, she started a Ph.D. in the lab of molecular cell biology at KU Leuven. She is studying a promising therapeutic target that she wants to translate into a new drug to treat life-threatening fungal infections.
