Stony reefs of Belgium: a hidden oasis under a threat

About the research

Stony reefs in the Belgian North Sea are rich, vibrant ecosystems, home to anemones, crabs, and many other marine creatures. These hidden underwater oases offer food and shelter to countless species, but they are under serious threat from bottom fishing practices. But researchers like Pavlína  Podholová (Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences) are on a mission to protect these reefs before it's too late. Sailing aboard the research vessel Belgica, Pavlína documents the current health of these stony reefs. By setting up this baseline, the team can track the success of new protective measures and help shape future policies.
