Vaccinating with a nasal spray

About the research

Why do we administer vaccines through an injection into the blood stream, while viruses such as the COVID virus enter our bodies through the nose? For this reason, Ilke Van Tente (UAntwerpen) is working on vaccines in the form of a nasal spray. "Nasal sprays can provide more effective protection by producing antibodies directly in the mucous membranes of the nose. This ensures fewer infections and better protection for vulnerable people. This way, we can also be better prepared for the next pandemic!", she explains. Watch the video.

Fascination for the power of nature, humans and animals made Ilke choose to study bio-engineering. Her doctoral research combines her passion for genetic engineering of bacteria and human health. Her goal is to develop a new vaccination method based on bacteria in a nasal spray. In this way, she hopes to contribute to a better fight against emerging pandemics.
