What if teeth could heal themselves?

About the research

Did you know that growing up, one in four children worldwide experience a traumatic dental injury? Current treatments for these injuries aren't optimal, nor long-lasting, and render the tooth brittle, leading to possible tooth loss. But what if teeth could heal themselves? That's what Una Ivkovic (KU Leuven - FWO) sinks her teeth into: a hydrogel that guides stem cells to the injury to generate new dental tissue and restore the damaged tooth 🦷

Fascinated by the complexity of the human body, Una Ivković pursued Biomedical Sciences. There she got to know regenerative medicine, a fusion of material and health sciences, leading her towards her FWO-funded PhD project, 'iDentgel'. The project aims to design a dental product for regenerative dentistry, tailored to young patients with a traumatic dental injury. Through her work, Una envisions a future where dentists can provide durable treatments to their young patients, ensuring they can smile confidently each day.
