About the research

Watching a baby grow up is fascinating, isn't it? Especially that magical moment when it takes its first steps as a toddler. But did you know that one in five hundred babies is born with a permanent brain injury and may never be able to walk independently? Nathalie De Beukelaer (KU Leuven) hopes to change this with her research.

Dolls and Barbies were always around during Nathalie’s childhood. Hence, she is very interested and fascinated in the motor and muscle development during the first years of life.
At the department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Nathalie is working with ultrasound imaging of the lower limb muscles. With her research, she aims to understand the altered muscle growth in infants and toddlers facing a lifelong physical disability.
