About the research

"Some people barely dare to leave their homes because they are so anxious, worried to death to have a panic attack in the supermarket." Behavioral therapy and medication can help people with such an anxiety disorder. Still, some people continue to have a hard time. Laura Luyten (KU Leuven) wants to help those people by using so-called deep brain stimulation.

What happens in our brain when we are anxious? And can we use this knowledge to help people with an anxiety disorder? Laura Luyten is fascinated by these questions and examines them in lab animals and in patients. A PhD in Experimental Neurosurgery (KU Leuven, 2011) and research stays at a.o. the University of California laid the foundation for her research, which is situated at the intersection of psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience.
