About the research

Did you know that as many as 3 in 4 women suffer from a vaginal yeast infection at some point in their lives? Does the type of underwear they wear play a role in this? For instance, do certain underwear fabrics cause more or just less fungal infections? That is what Leonore Vander Donck (UAntwerpen) is investigating in her PhD.

As a bioscience engineer, Leonore’s main interest is in microbiology and she has a passion for female health. In her PhD at the University of Antwerp, which is part of the large-scale citizen-science project Isala, she studies the influence of intimate hygiene products on the vaginal microbiome combining synthetic ecology and clinical trials. She hopes that her research will contribute to a better understanding of vaginal health and in resolving vaginal health issues, while helping to break the taboo surrounding the topic.
