About the research

Let it be clear once and for all: tomatoes are technically a fruit, as expert Jakub Salagovic (KU Leuven - FWO) explains. Jakub is dedicating his Ph.D. research to tomatoes. He models "virtual" tomato plants so that he can find the perfect growing conditions for these fruits, allowing you to enjoy tasty tomatoes all year round.

Jakub Salagovic was always interested in mathematics, programming, and natural sciences in general, but it was only when he discovered that equations can describe processes of live organisms that it all came together. His Ph.D. research in MeBioS group at KU Leuven is aiming to better understand the effect of temperature on tomato growth and ripening. To do so, Jakub is developing a mathematical model, a digital twin of a real-life tomato.
