A closer eye on the potato field thanks to drones and AI

About the research

Potatoes are highly susceptible to diseases and pests. To better protect these crops, computer scientist Jana Wieme (UGent - ILVO) deploys drones and artificial intelligence. "I train a computer to look for diseased plants, weeds, or harmful insects, such as the Colorado beetle, on drone images of a potato field. When the system detects something, the farmer gets a notification so he can act quickly."

During her studies, Jana Wieme discovered the beauty of programming and decided to head toward computer sciences. From her master in Information Technology Engineering she rolled into the fascinating world of agriculture. After an exciting thesis, she didn’t hesitate to continue on that topic. So in 2020, she began her PhD at the FWO, in combination with UGent and ILVO about anomaly detection in potato fields using drones and AI.
