Soy 'made in Belgium'

About the research

Soy, that's a crop grown in tropical countries like Brazil, right? True, but Margo Vermeersch (ILVO) and her colleagues want to change that. They want to grow soy in Belgium, so that in the future we will have to import less than the current 700,000 tons of soy per year. Wondering how far they are with that? Watch the video in which Margo explains everything. She is convinced: with a little more patience, we will soon be able to enjoy Belgian soy drinks!

Margo Vermeersch
ILVO

For years Margo has been passionate about (sub)tropical fauna and flora. Now she works as a junior researcher at ILVO where she wants to optimize soybean cultivation in Flanders and make it more sustainable. During her project, the soy team searched for local 'Rhizobium' bacteria all over Flanders. They could only achieve this with the help of more than 1,000 'citizen scientists' who sowed soy in their gardens.
