Chemicals in the body mapped

About the research

To measure is to know. That is the credo of Michelle Laeremans (VITO). Together with a team of researchers, she monitors the health of 300 children in Mol, Dessel, and Retie (Belgium). They do this from pregnancy until the child reaches the age of 18. In this way, they map exposure to chemicals. "This allows us to offer participants personal tips to reduce exposure and also inform the wider community, for example around the safe use of well water."

Michelle Laeremans
VITO

Michelle Laeremans is a researcher at VITO, an independent Flemish research organisation in the area of cleantech and sustainable development. This makes her observe, discover and ask new questions every day. She likes to talk about what she sees on her path along wonder and challenge.

One of the research projects Michelle is working on is 3xG. Mol and Dessel, as home bases of the nuclear industry in Belgium, want to set an example for the rest of the country with this. 'Measuring is knowing' makes this region one of the best monitored in Belgium. Together with a team of researchers from VITO, UAntwerpen and PIH, Michelle is committed to the general welfare of the region. The 3xG study is a prerequisite for the disposal of low-level radioactive waste in Dessel commissioned by ONDRAF/NIRAS, STORA and MONA.
