About the research

Do you also just love coffee? A lot of good coffee comes from Kivu and Ituri, regions in eastern Congo where fierce fighting has raged for years between rebel groups and the state. How do coffee farmers manage to produce and sell coffee despite this difficult situation? Cooperatives play an important role in this, as Wannes Slosse (Ghent University) explains in this video.

Since he was a small boy, Wannes has been volunteering for Rikolto-Vredeseilanden. Today, in his PhD Research at the Bioscience engineering and Economics faculties of the UGent, he puts the NGO's mission into work: A sustainable income for farmers and nutritious, affordable food for everyone. By studying Rikolto-supported Coffee Cooperatives in the Eastern Congo, he tries to understand how farmers can make a living in a difficult institutional environment.
