About the research

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. One out of 4 people dies from it. To improve treatment options for patients suffering from heart disease, Mathias Peirlinck (UGent - TU Delft - Stanford University) develops digital twins of patient hearts. Digital what? Watch Mathias (and his digital twin) explain it in this video.

Inspired by the human ability to engineer solutions to medical problems, Mathias Peirlinck has taken a keen interest in the human heart. Within his research, Mathias aims to develop new techniques to combine clinical data and physics-based modeling to improve our understanding of the patient-specific behavior of this crucial organ. Doing so, he aims to improve the current treatment options for patients suffering from heart disease.
